Episode 153 - Nabal and Abigail: Encounter with David” (Part 1)

Episode Summary

This story is narrated in 1 Samuel 25. It is a story which features Nabal, who is portrayed in completely negative terms. His name means, “Fool.” He is churlish and ill-mannered. He is also fabulously wealthy, but unwilling to give any of his proceeds to David or the ragtag group that is with him. David’s men had emphasized that while they were around Nabal and his servants were safe and his flocks were also protected from thieves. Since this was protection that Nabal neither asked for or paid for, he saw this as extortion. In telling David’s men “no,” he in addition insulted David as a man on the lam from authorities. At this point, Abigail, Nabal’s wife, who is described as intelligent and beautiful, tried to intervene. The first thing she did was to put together a lavish present for David and his men. It was a smart thing for her to do since, once he heard about Nabal’s negative answer and slur, he and 400 men were on the way to Nabal to wreak havoc. On the 28th, we will conclude the story.
