Episode 148 - Rebekah: Isaac’s Wife and Orchestrator of Events

Episode Summary

Her story is featured in Genesis 24, 25, and 27. First, she is found at a well when Abraham’s servant is on a quest for a suitable wife for Isaac, the child that Sarah bore to him. Abraham wanted a wife for Isaac from the extended family in Mesopotamia. Rebekah, of course, was Abraham’s niece. When she “passed a test” by offering the servant and his animals water, the servant knew that he had hit paydirt. He lavished her with jewelry, asked to stay at her home, and announced to the family why he had come.

Though the family was happy to let Rebekah go to be Isaac’s wife, they at first demurred. But she agreed to go right away. Later, she had trouble conceiving, which prompted Isaac’s prayer for fertility. The prayer worked, but when Rebekah was having a difficult pregnancy God showed up and told her that she was having twins, each boy would become a nation, but the older would serve the younger.

After many years, Rebekah had no qualms about deceiving her husband and betraying her older son so that Isaac would bless Jacob instead of Esau. Rebekah was more than adept about pulling off this grand deception.
